On a perfect crisp winters morning, the day had finally arrived for the wedding showcase at The Walled Garden at Cowdray. As the recommended wedding cake supplier for The Walled Garden, I had been invited along to exhibit my work.
After weeks of nonstop rain, the cold frost was a welcome change and set the scene for a really special day. The gardens looked magical, glistening in the morning sun under the backdrop of Cowdray ruins.
I excitedly arrived early to set up my display in The Castle Room, featuring three wedding cakes in various styles and sizes. I wanted to showcase different techniques to capture everyone’s imagination, so I deliberately created a different effect on each tier - from fondant to buttercream, ruffles to stencilling, neutral to colourful. There were lots of lovely comments as people came over to chat about their wedding cake ideas.
I always think designing your wedding cake is one of the most fun parts of the wedding planning journey and tasting the cakes definitely adds to the experience! With this is mind, I offered 3 flavour samples:
My signature rich chocolate cake filled with chocolate buttercream – I use real chocolate with a 70% cocoa content in this recipe, so it is extremely rich and indulgent.
Zesty lemon cake filled with lemon curd & fresh lemon buttercream – this offers a lovely fresh sponge with the perfect balance of sweetness and sharpness.
Sticky toffee pudding cake with salted caramel buttercream – this my modern take on the traditional family pudding and its surprisingly light in texture but with a wonderful depth of flavour.
One of the lovely things about showcases and open days, is being able to answer the questions of the couples I meet and offer advice on how to create their dream wedding cake. Everyone seemed so surprised when I said you could pick a different flavour for each tier, or that you can have a buttercream cake in the summer. It was also helpful to discuss portions sizes and how we can accommodate guest with dietary requirements. Remember, your wedding cake will be completely bespoke to you, so every element will be exactly as you want and need it to be.
There were a number of other carefully selected suppliers showcasing on the day alongside Wiggle Cakes, each picked because they offer a brilliant product and service, that ties in with the high standards expected of the Cowdray events team. From florists, caterers, entertainment and venue dressing, to photographers, videographers, and hair & make up. We even had The Landy Bar in the courtyard, braving the cold to offer drinks whilst dreaming of warm sunny weddings when they will be dishing out fruity Pimms.
In the week since the wedding showcase at The Walled Garden, I have been overwhelmed by the number of people wishing to book their wedding cake in with me and the wonderful feedback on my cakes – “We haven’t been able to stop thinking about your cakes since”; “It was the best lemon cake we have ever tried”; “We loved the bottom 2 tiers of your white cake”. My diary has definitely filled up a lot and I am set to have a wonderfully busy year ahead.
It was an absolute pleasure to meet so many of you there, and a real honour to be the recommended wedding cake maker for The Walled Garden at Cowdray. I can’t thank Hannah and the rest of her team enough, for hosting such an inspiring and well organised day.
Lastly from me, if you are looking for a stunning luxury wedding cake in and around the Midhurst area (and beyond) please do get in touch. I can’t wait to be part of your wedding this year and create the wedding cake you have always dreamed of.
